Best private plots 10 - Die besten Gärten 2010 will start on April 1st.
The award recognizes exemplary design of sustainable private open spaces, highlighting the garden as a place of innovation, as a space for creative expression and action, as contemporary dialogue between architecture, ecology and landscape.
The competition is being held for the 4th time since 2006. The award criteria include: idea, conceptual and artistic quality, ecological quality, use of plants and materials, relationship between inside and outside, delimitation of space and organisation of open space, technical planning, sustainability. Special attention will also be given to the individual diversity of use and functionality. The open space must be clearly identifiable as intended for private residence and use.
The prize honours exceptional achievements in the design of sustainable private outdoor space and gardens, which were completed after January 1st, 2000. This is an open competition. Landscape architects, architects, garden owners, designers, florists, gardeners, artists, nurseries and landscaping firms, as well as teams including a combination thereof are eligible.

International symposium on garden architecture
September 25th, 2010
at the Loisium Hotel, Loisiumallee, A-3550 Langenlois, Austria
The symposium will be devoted to sustainable aesthetic and cultural concepts in garden and landscape architecture and new impulses in the fields of technology, design, the arts and sciences.
The jurors will also be the speakers at the symposium and will present their respective approaches to landscape architecture, based on their own oeuvres.
The registration fee for the symposium is ? 60, and registration at www.privateplots.at, info@privateplots.at is required.
Exhibition
The projects nominated for the award by the jury will be exhibited from September 25th to November 5th, 2010 at the Loisium, Langenlois, Austria.
Catalogue
The bilingual catalogue - in English and German - "best private plots 10 - Die besten Gärten 2010. Internationale Beispiele zur Gartenarchitektur" will present the about 30 nominated outdoor spaces and gardens and contributions by the five jurors. The catalogue will be launched at the award ceremony. The catalogues of the precedent competitions can be ordered at www.privateplots.at.
Awarding authority and host
Thanks to Verein Lebensqualität - Natur im Garten, the discussion on garden architecture has been raised to an international level and combined with a competition. The initiative is funded by the Federal Province of Lower Austria.
Idea and concept
The private plots & public spots concept is based on an interdisciplinary discussion of aesthetic and cultural concepts in garden and landscape architecture by the landscape architect Karin Standler, the horticultural scientist Andrea Heistinger and the architect Robert Froschauer, and was expanded by contributions of cultural theorist Gisela Steinlechner.
